The city of Esbjerg
Esbjerg is a city of contrasts. It is young and dynamic with shipping, oil industry and great ambitions within the field of renewable energies. With more than 80,000 inhabitants, Esbjerg is the fifth largest city in Denmark and has a lot to offer in terms of shopping, bars, music, cafés and restaurants. The city of Esbjerg is located on the western coast of Jutland in the middle of magnificent scenery with white, sandy beaches.
The municipality of Esbjerg has approximately 125,000 inhabitants and includes the smaller towns of Bramming and Ribe. Here you can once again observe the contrasts: Within half an hour you may go from the right-angled streets in the dynamic, only 140 years young city of Esbjerg to the quietness of the winding streets and alleys in the medieval 1300-year-old town of Ribe. The extremely popular island Fanø is also just a 12 minute ferry ride from Esbjerg, where one can enjoy wide sandy beaches, scenic bike routes, little villages and walks in the nature.
Moreover, the city can be characterized as an important educational city. Esbjerg has been growing as an educational city from year to year, with increasing amounts of study programmes, courses and students. However, the city is not too big for easily finding a relevant student job. Today, the city has more than 5,000 students, of which 1,300-1,400 have chosen to be educated at the University of Southern Denmark. Besides the Danish students, several of Esbjergs educational institutions have a number of students from abroad, who to a great extent contribute to an exciting, international study environment.
How to get to Esbjerg
Esbjerg is easily accessible. You may arrive by motorway, train or bus. Copenhagen and Hamburg are only approximately 3 hours travel away. The airport of Billund is only a 45 minutes drive from Esbjerg.
Student accommodation in Esbjerg
It is rather easy for students to find good and cheap housing. The Accommodation office of SDU has a large number of students accommodations for international students at its disposal. SDU guarantees to find accommodation for all international students.
If you are into sports you will find that almost all branches of sports are represented in Esbjerg. The city is leading in football, handball and ice hockey. Furthermore, there are several clubs and fitness studios, where you can practice your preferred form of sport, such as swimming, fitness or running.
In the music hall of Esbjerg Musikhuset Esbjerg it is possible to listen to music, to see plays in the theatre, or experience musicals and other shows. If you want a more 'informal' form of entertainment you can go to Tobakken, which is the music club for rhythmical music. All kinds of concerts are held here rock, pop and jazz. Also local, up-coming bands get a chance to perform here.
If you are looking for entertainment for little money Huset is a great place to go. It is a cultural centre for young people where you are always welcome to meet with fellow students over a cup of coffee and a board game.
